HOW TO CHOOSE KARATEGI

Karategi is the traditional garment for the practice of karate and many other martial arts. Under a single definition of karategi, however, there are garments with different cuts, different compositions and with a weight of the fabric that can vary greatly. This can sometimes make it difficult to choose the best karategi based on your needs. This short guide aims to be a tool to better orient yourself in the choice.

PRACTITIONER'S EXPERIENCE

The experience of the practitioner, which is normally commensurate with the number of years on the tatami, is a very important element for the choice of karategi.
New martial arts practitioners or all those who have been training for some time and who are about to face the first competitions will be able to choose one of the models on the Page of Karategi Beginners and / or Children.Karateka and martial arts practitioners who have a consolidated experience can opt for traditional karategi, kumite or kata present on the page of Karategi Agonists you can find the karategi of the best brands on the market (Arawaza, ITAKI, Tokaido, Shureido, Best Sport, Kappa, Before )

Kumite, Kata or Traditional

Karategi from KUMITE is a technical garment used in sports karate for combat (kumite). The main features are to have long sleeves and trousers that reach respectively up to cover the wrist and ankle and a long "skirt" (the inferire part of the jacket). They are generally made of lightweight or super-light fabric that leaves complete freedom to the rapid movements that must be performed in combat.

The kata karategi instead is made with sleeves and pants shorter than the kumite models and which arrive respectively approximately in the middle The TRADITIONAL karategi is instead made with a long cut of sleeves and trousers and with a heavy fabric weight. It is the type of karategi preferred by those who between the sporting and martial dimensions of the discipline prefer the latter.of the forearm and a little lower than half of the tibia. The kata involves the execution of precise forms, for this reason the karategi must be able to leave the limbs visible in order to allow a better evaluation of the technique.

Another feature of these karategi is to have a heavy or medium-heavy fabric that produces the characteristic noise

(snap effect) during the execution of the techniques.
The
TRADITIONAL karategi is instead made with a long cut of sleeves and trousers and with a heavy fabric weight. It is the type of karategi preferred by those who between the sporting and martial dimensions of the discipline prefer the latter.

Weight

Grammage refers to the weight of the fabric, measured in grams per square meter. The weight of the fabric is in close correlation with the cut: while the karategi from KUMITE are made with light fabric, those from KATA and TRADITIONAL have heavy or medium-heavy fabrics. Fabrics can be divided on the basis of grammage into four main categories:

– Light and super-light for weights equal to or less than 230 gr/m²
– Medium-heavy for weights between 320 and 380 gr/m²
– Heavy weights equal to or greater than 400 gr/m²

Fabric

As well as the weight, also the composition of the fabric is in close relationship with the cutting of the karategi and therefore with the type of use that must be made of it.
The karategi from KUMITE will have a polyester cotton blend fabric (or sometimes just polyester). Polyester is in fact a lighter material than cotton and that allows you to make super-light clothing. These karategi meet the needs of karateka who in combat need a technical garment that leaves the most complete freedom to fast movements.

Diametrically opposed instead the need of athletes who practice KATA for which instead the need is that of a karategi that highlights and that give body to the technique with a marked snap effect. The fabric must therefore be heavy and, even if lately kata garments have been made with a percentage of polyester, the fabric of these karategi remains mainly in pure cotton.

Size

Another very important element in the choice of karategi is the size. In general, choosing the size of a martial arts uniform is not easy. Different manufacturing companies use different size tables, and often the buyer is disoriented about choosing the best size.

On the SPORTLINE15.COM on the page of each product there is the "Measurement table" button through which you can consult the specific measurement table.

Is it necessary to be abundant in the choice of size?

Un principio che va sempre tenuto in considerazione è che la scelta della taglia è in relazione all’età di chi deve vestire il karategi e del faA principle that must always be taken into account is that the choice of size is in relation to the age of who must wear karategi and the fact that this person is still growing.

For example, the choice of karategi of a 14-year-old boy 162 cm tall cannot be the same as a thirty-year-old person of the same height. While the first will probably opt for a size 170, thus choosing a karategi that can also go well in the following months, the second will opt for a size 160 as it more conforms to its height, which will not vary in the future.

How much does karategi drop after the first wash?

The process of shrinkage of the fabric after the first wash depends on the composition of the fabric and is all the greater the higher the percentage of cotton. The shrinkage will be maximum for karategi with 100% cotton fabric (generally corresponding to a drop of 4 cm in length of the jacket and trousers, 3 cm per sleeve and about 2 cm wide of the jacket) and zero for karategi 100% polyester.

One thing to take into account, however, is that the indications that are based on the height of the person available in the measurement tables on our site already take into account the drop in tissue. So an adult of 180 cm with an athletic build will not have to opt for a size of 185 or 190 cm but will be able to choose the size that corresponds to his actual height.

A karategi can only be replaced if it has not been washed.

Our staff has a long experience and is able to give you good advice in choosing size and karategi.
